Today was the day that I left my beautiful spot in Chatswood, and started my South Island trip by going north.
First goal was to reach Kaikohe by 1pm which I missed by 10 minutes :(. The ride up via hwy 16 and along the coast and Dargaville was really nice. The best part however was going through Waipoua forest, bursting through the forest and seeing the blue sea and sand dunes at Omapere/Opononi. That view is so drastically different from the woods that I nearly forgot to take the corner.
Met up with Mark at Kaikohe and he lead the way to can’t remember forest to see a nice collection of kauri trees.
It was a gravel road leading up to the spot where we parked, and took a little 700m loop through the woods. Nice looking trees, even though they were still quite young.
Time to double back along the gravel road back to the main one and on to the Mangamuka’s. Really nice stretch of road. Smooth and easy turns. Ended up doing it three times. Going up / going back and then up again. Followed by the last stretch of gravel bit to end up at Marks place.
Helped him out with some random work and repacked some of my stuff. Prepared the bike for 90 mile beach. Got to eat some nice snapper and fel asleep in a caravan. Great day!
